iPhone 3G Jail Break?July 23, 2008 1:13PM
By Joe Wise
Just like many other AT&T customers the announcement of the iPhone 3G got me really excited. With the reduced price plan and new 2.0 firmware I finally thought it would give me everything I wanted. MMS and an SSH client. Well it has been nearly two weeks and neither is available. So like many others I had to resort to "Jail breaking" my phone to get a SSH client option.

Less than a week after release, the iphone-dev team has found away to jail break the 2.0 software (but NOT unlock it), Unfortunately there is not a way to jail break the phone through Linux yet and I have not figured out how to run iTunes with wine yet, so in order to jail break your phone you either need to use a Mac or Windows, I decided vista because well.. I don't have a Mac... yet.
The steps are simple and the only tricky part is getting your iPhone into DFU mode. The first thing one needs to do is to grab the needed files. The "official" page for these does not seem to work properly, but if you do a search on your favorite torrent search site for iPhone 3g jailbreak you should find the needed torrent fairly quickly. The torrent should contain 3 files iPhone1,2_2.0_5A347_Custom_Restore.ipsw, x12220000_4_Recovery.ipsw and a Readme.txt. The total file size should be 243,988 KB (about 240 meg).
While you are downloading the torrent make a back up of your iPhone using iTunes, it will take a while to do. The Readme.txt tells you exactly what you need to do to get it to work. Do not get impatient, jail breaking can take hours to do so make sure that you have the time. Also please be aware there is a chance that your phone could be "bricked" (made unusable) during this process. This site is not responsible if your phone should be come "bricked". Since the Readme.txt covers the exact procedure, it is pasted below.
So far many of the programs that you would want (namely MMS) is not yet converted for the new iPhone software but Terminal and SSH is. For people like me the ability to ssh into remote computers from anywhere I have cell signal is a great asset. I can finally go out to movies and be able to work at a moments notice while still watching the movie. Most of the software that is available now is mainly for developers but I would expect much of that software will be updated in coming weeks.
Hopefully Apple will release or allow developers to release Apple approved MMS and SSH clients so I can un-Jail break my phone, until then this is my only option.
Here are the steps to jail break your phone, please remember the risks of doing this and know that I am not responsible should your phone gets bricked.

Instructions for Jailbreaking your iPhone 3G ONLY on Windows (tested on Vista, but should work the same on XP)
================================================== ===
MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A BACKUP OF YOUR PHONE
1. You need to download two files:
x12220000_4_Recovery.ipsw and iPhone1,2_2.0_5A347_Custom_Restore.ipsw. You can get both of them over in this torrent:
2. Make sure you have itunes 7.7 installed.
for vista: Click start then copy this into the search box and press enter after:
for XP: click start then run, then copy this into the run box:
Code:
%appdata%Apple ComputeriTunes
3. Make a directory callled: Device Support
If it already exists, clear it.
4. copy x12220000_4_Recovery.ipsw into the Device Support folder you just created.
5. ok, you need to get your device into DFU mode. watch this video to see how:

6. Once your phone is in DFU mode and detected by iTunes (should be black screen on phone NOT itunes logo with usb cable), click on iphone in itunes, then hold the SHIFT key and click on restore.
7. Browse to the folder where you downloaded iPhone1,2_2.0_5A347_Custom_Restore.ipsw and select it. itunes will then extract the file and you will see the ipod dev team's pinapple logo pop up after a few seonds, like this:

8. when restoring has completed, it will ask you to connect to itunes, then re-do the activation process (download carrier settings)
9. Restore your backup! this should automatically be made. it should pop up right after downloading carrier settings, but you may also do it by right clicking your iphone on the left, and selecting "restore iphone"
10. That's it, you're done!
