By Joe
From the June 15th's Official Newsletter of the Seneca Nations.
I home everyone is well and in good health.
I am proud to announce on behalf of the Seneca Nation of Indians an anticipated record high of 64 students will be graduating from High School this year from Gowanda, Lake Shore and Silver Creek school systems. It was a pleasure to honor our students for their accomplishments in a special recognition dinner held at Romanellos in Hamburg, N.Y. Congratulations, Students!
To the High Schoool graduates from both the Cattaraugus and Allegany Territories, I encourage all of you to continue your education. Work hard in college, concentrate on learning, be persisistent, and do your best to achieve good marks. This will result in your own achievement, something that you will do by yourself and for yourself. You have heard often that the key to success is education. Very true. Success in school is achieved only by hard work.
Today, the Seneca Nation can offer employment opportunities, if you choose to work for the Seneca Nation. We also need future leaders in the Seneca Nation.
I want to commend your parents for your attaining your Hight School diploma. I know they have been and will continue to be a guiding force in your education. When they tell you to do your homework and read your books, they do that because they care deeply for you. Listen to them. I know this because I am a parent, and i have done this many times for my sons.
Drug & Alcohol Abuse in the Communities
As President of the Seneca Nation, I am concerned about all members. This is why I need to bring up the topic of drugs and drug dealers in our communities. Unfortunately and sadly, there are persons in our territories who are illegally selling drugs, attempting to coerce our people to become users and addicted. This is highly illegal and very dangerous. These people are under surveillance.
It is my top priority to develop a comprehensive plan to address the drug and alcohol abuse problem within our communities. We need to take an active role in the prevention of drug abuse and treatment of our tribal members seeking help. We ar elooking at some programs which are successful in treating patients and families, and we are looking toward providing a drug/alcohol rehab facility. The Tribal Council fully endorses these plans.
We understand that the dangerous, powerful Methadone drug destroys brain cells immediately upon first use, and soon destroys the entire person. This would be a terrible waste of a person. With the cooperation of Law Enforcement and the Seneca Nation's Marshalls Dept., we will begin fighting against the illegal sale of drugs within our community to make it a safer placer for all of us, especially our children.
Seneca Nation Committiees
The Seneca Nation today is growing rapidly, with many facets of duties and responsibilities. We have many programs; to name a few: Budget & finance, Health, Housing, Education, Planning and a myriad of other programs. In order to give proper attention to each program or other necessary functions, the Tribal council has appointed committees, who meet monthly , to each focus on assigned programs or other necessary functions, discuss relative matters, reach a consensus and then make their reports and recommendations to the Tribal council for review and action. This system works well and efficiently. At this time, I want to commend the committees for their diligence, hard work and their concern for the Seneca Nation.
In other matters, we continue to protect the interests of the Seneca Nation. We stand by our Treaties and our Sovereignty.
